Wesley The Preacher
John Pollock
Whilst there are many good biographies on Wesley this one is exceptionally
good: it is very readable and, as Pollock always does, gives clear understanding
of the spiritual issues involved at the significant stages.
The background to Wesley and 18th Century England is given and then in contrast
we see clearly what God did during what we call ‘the great evangelical
awakening’. Pollock paints an honest picture of Wesley, including the failures
and flaws in the man; yet this only shows the grace of God even more during that
period.
Particularly captivating are the many testimonies of conversions, preservations
of Wesley and particularly how the gospel of our Lord Jesus transformed this
nation. An inspiration to all of God’s children!
Church history may not be popular these days, but to ignore what God has done in
the past is to miss out, at the very least, of understanding our heritage in the
Lord.
